What Is a Rank Map and Why Does It Matter for Michigan Businesses

Published on April 25, 2026

TLDR;

Rank Maps are a grid of google searches made at GPS coordinates, showing you what position you appear in for a given search term.

60%-70% of searches go to the top three Google Business Profiles. Everything after top three is basically invisible to searchers. So, you’ll want to focus on getting your rank map green to attract more customers.

Appearing in Local Search Matters

For a local business, ranking in position three instead of four can make a meaningful difference in the income of the business. Every position after the top three gets very, very little traffic. I’ve heard around the SEO community that the three businesses shown in the map pack get 60%-70% of the clicks.

How to Know Where You Rank

Given how important it is to appear in the top three, it would be worthwhile to know where (physically as in GPS coordinates) and for what keywords (search phrases) you are appearing.

Here is an example Rank Map for a Junk removal company. I used a tool called Local Falcon to simulate google searches for the term “junk removal” at each of these GPS coordinates. The results below are the rankings for the google business profile for that company, for “junk removal” at each of those locations.

The company is ranking #1 right on top of their Google Business Profile address, and rankings quickly start to fall off the farther you get out. Which, makes sense since this is metro Detroit and its pretty competitive for junk removal with tons of competitors in close proximity.

How to Make Your Rank Map Green

Your rank map is most likely to be green right above your Google Business Profile address.

The most simple fix is to set add an address to your Google Business Profile. I’ve seen so many businesses with their GBP set to a “service area”, which Google very rarely serves to customers except for when there is very little competition.

The next thing to do is to improve your website and focus on SEO so that users stay on your site longer, and either call your number or fill in a contact form. Those actions tell Google that the searcher was satisfied, and therefore Google is more likely to serve your GBP to other searchers for the same Query.

Another easy and fast fix is to fill in every box on your google business profile. So easy, yet most business owners don’t do it.

What This Means For Small Businesses

By focusing on your SEO, you can turn more of the rank map into green, giving you organic search traffic and helping potential customers find you. So, the more top three results you can get, the better of a chance you have for getting the call.
